chapter 8 - talking about identity
I found the discussion of Stevie's experience in chapter 8 quite interesting. When she was talking about an identity that is made up of many different parts of many different people. It reminds me of how the media portrays the perfect woman. This girls lips, that girls legs, this other girl’s personality. How can a regular person avoid being influenced by this unattainable dream? This chapter made me think about image and how it seems that children these days seem to be worrying about their image at a younger and younger age. Is it right that society today seems to encourage young girls to become little pop stars, caring only about their appearance and not about developing their mind? What can we do as their teachers to help these young people build self-confidence and a realistic self identity?

I like Ara's comments on identity. It is a scary proposition to think how younger girls are being portrayed, or influenced.
The meaning of identity is complex. Think about how the sum of all our parts create our whole identity. I think we find our identity through our interests, things we are good at, and the one's closest to us.
Have any of us relyed on someone else to create, or find our identity? As teachers, I believe that in order to enhance our student's sense of identity, we should encourage children to offer their ideas and acknowledge that they have something to offer.
Another question is, how do you think the identities of Aboriginal Peoples have been affected by the attempts to irradicate their culture?
